I grew up in the 60's and 70's with classical music on the radio and record player, an RCA Victor Victrola to be exact. We didn't get a television until I was in elementary school and my brother and I would ask to "watch the victrola. " If the ear splitting, thumping, rolling boom boxes are any indication, most children are being raised with rap and pop music at volumes scientifically proven to cause permanent hearing loss. These children are now disabled for education purposes and physically incapable of appreciating the subtleties of fine classical and jazz performances, let alone participate in their creation.
For an in depth discussion, including all the corporate and political manipulations, I recommend "Who Killed Classical Music" by Albert Lebrecht. It's a lengthy read and highly informative.
